Aarni was born and raised in the Pacific and was admitted to the bar as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand, in 2010.
Aarni is a Senior Human Rights Advisor with the Pacific Community’s Human Rights Social Development Division (HRSD). She holds a Masters degree in Law with Honours from the University of Auckland, and a Bachelor in Arts degree specialising in Film, Television and Media Studies. She completed her final year of undergraduate study at the University of Uppsala, Sweden where she focused on International Criminal Law.
Aarni has over 8 years’ experience as a practicing lawyer, prior to joining HRSD in 2018 she was a Barrister in City Chambers, Auckland where she worked alongside Queens Counsel. She later joined the Public Defence Service in Tauranga and Auckland where she was involved in a range of criminal work which saw her appear in the District, High and Court of Appeal in New Zealand.
Aarni is passionate about human rights education and ensuring that marginalised groups have access to justice, she has done notable work in this area particularly in the Solomon Islands and Tonga. Aarni is also responsible for leading HRSD’s work with justice service providers and is the currently holds the portfolio for disability rights.
