The Chief Justice of New Zealand, Dame Sian Elias will be opening the 2010 Pacific Regional Consultation for Judges and Magistrates on the Application of Human Rights Conventions and Standards in Auckland, New Zealand on 13 December.
The Pacific Regional Rights Resource Team (RRRT) of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) will be hosting this regional consultation for judges and magistrates.
For the first time, the consultation will include members of the judiciary from the northern Pacific (Palau, Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of the Marshall Islands). Current and emerging human rights issues, including violence against women, disability and judicial independence in conflict and post-conflict societies will be covered during the three-day consultation.
The Pacific Regional Consultation for Judges and Magistrates is part of SPC / RRRT's ongoing programme to advance human rights in the Pacific region.
The 2010 judges and magistrates consultation is supported by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID).
The Pacific Regional Rights Resource Team (RRRT) provides human rights training, technical support and policy and advocacy services. RRRT is a programme of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC).
